And We're in!

I am writing this post from my new desk in my new studio in my new house! To think that a year ago we were looking at sections trying to figure out if we could do a project like this at all. And now after a mere few months of homelessness we have a home of our very own for the first time! I am so incredibly grateful and find that I regularly have to pinch myself to believe that it's all real. A huge THANK YOU to all those who helped in small or large parts to get us in here, we couldn't have done it without you! We are still not fully unpacked yet so I hope you'll excuse the boxes in the photos and the unfinished-ness of the interiors but for those who've been asking here are some pics.

I finally got to hang my Ryan McLennan prints! Boston likes it here. My studio is the last room to be unpacked as you can see.   And Kota likes it here too.

Photographic Update

Hi folks, This is going to be a short one tonight as I'm feeling a little under the weather. Not to worry, it's just a cold, but I'm not feeling overly chatty. So in lieu of words here is your Photographic Update.

Shared Lines

I'm going to take a break from house blogging this week to bring you some of the most exciting work I have so far seen at the gallery. (For those of you who don't know, I work at a gallery sometimes.) And this week is just so happens that there is a super exciting, inspirational new show on. It's called Shared Lines and is a collaboration between some artists from Christchurch and some more artists from Sendai (in Japan). Both cities were ravaged by their respective disasters in 2011 and as a response Shared Lines was born. This is my fav. Wooden dog by Misato Sano.

I love the very japanese aesthetic of Maiko Kanno

The simple yet elegant, and oh so poignant work of Christchurch artist Lucy Matthews

And I met the lovliest girl who had made the most beautiful film which combined fireworks and rock and roll dancing. Only the best combination ever!

How we got here and where we go now.

As promised I'm going to talk a little about our design now. We started by looking at small eco houses because that's what we wanted to build. We wanted something small but interesting looking and that makes the most of the limited space we can afford. From there we decided that a high pitched roof was the way to go and thus my mezzanine studio came into being. (I seriously cannot contain my excitement about my mezzanine studio!) My husband happens to be a hugely multi-talented fellow and so he has single handedly designed and drawn up these fantastic plans. So that in a few short months we should have a house which looks like this:

The plan is that it is a small (ok lets be honest, tiny!), efficient family home which will keep us warm in winter and cool in summer with the least amount of power input. We're using an airtight wrap and super efficient, well, everything, to try and get as close to a passive house as we can afford. Luckily this is another area of Robbies expertiese so we don't have to pay a consultant! This is how the build looks this week. The white stuff in this image is polystyrene and will keep our slab from loosing too much heat through the ground in the winter and from gaining too much in summer. The poly goes all the way around to stop something called thermal bridging which is when heat/cold transfers from one place to another through something. It's called Maxraft and it is different from your standard slab in that there are no footings that extend below the ground, which is helpful if the ground is not super stable or in an earthquake situation. This is a pretty exciting stage because it's the first time we've been able to see where the house sits in relation to it's surroundings. Our amazing view north to the crown range and the walking trail and not too many of our neighbours!

And here is one of our site supervisor inspecting our new Maxraft system.

Here I go into the blogosphere

Hi folks, You have probably figured out if you've arrived here at this page I am an artist/illustrator/graphic designer/general creative. Not a writer! However, there are some fairly exciting things happening in my life right now that I'd like to share. So, undeterred by my lack of writing skill and even if I only end up sharing this with my mum (hi mum) I'm going to give blogging a go anyway. So here goes! Now despite the fact that this is essentially a website about art, my blog is going to start in a different direction. Building. Why? Well because my husband and I are currently in the process of building our first house! What has that go to do with art? Well not much at this stage but I promise I will be focusing more on that topic as we go on and we begin fitting out my studio. Eeeek! I've never had my own personal home studio before and I'm very excited! But this is where we are at now. Digging.

And a cute photo of my boy in a digger bucket for good measure. So that's all for my first foray I think. Next time I'll put up some pics of the house we plan to build (designed from scratch by my very talented husband!) and explain a bit about what we're trying to achieve with this mammoth operation. Thanks for stopping by! Laura
